the knee thing is a metaphor of sorts. you know how people kneel to god and pray? well, she is on her knees begging... she is giving into her fears and insecurities. and so she ends up cutting, b/c that's the only thing she can control anymore. she has lost all hope for life and thus is ready to disappear.
