Azerbaijan is known mostly for its rich oil and gas resources. In 1900 Azerbaijan was producing 50% of the world oil. During the Soviet period the oil industry was closed to Western companies, but after gaining independence Azerbaijan has signed $40 billion worth oil and gas contracts with leading western companies, including BP, Amoco, Pennzoil, Texaco and many others.
