Oppression.....no one's being forced to do anything, not those in favor nor against...not the issue. The issue is that we have to share the pledge, the flag, this country, and we can't give one more privileges than the other. We shouldn't allow "God," or "god" because some people don't believe in either. Let's stick to what we do have in common....love for this country.
Do not condescend. If there was one who misunderstood the metaphor, it was not me. I meant that faith, that is religion, we do not share. The faith that we must share is symbolically represented by the flag....faith in this institution...democracy...which this country proudly proclaims. "In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane."---Twain. It sits well with me that one should believe that what he has was confered upon him by God. I certainly do. However we do not all share this belief. What we all can acknowledge is that our forefathers secured our rights. I do not follow the argument that we are slaves. If you want to stray away from the definition of slavery as physical bondage. Let's. Then, yes we are slaves. We are perhaps are slaves of Fortune, this country especially men to the draft, ect.
Religious persecution...to allow the "under God" phrase is not to persecute anyone. It's merely reiterating something we've agreed upon....separation of church and state. If you want to pray, go ahead...at home, in your church. No one denies anyone's right to pray....but let's not shun the man who doesn't want to do the same. The pledge is of national value. Therefore we shouldn't have religion anywhere near it. This is what makes this land great as you say....everyone is accepted under the flag despite their faith in God, or lack thereof.
I love idealism as much as the next guy but in all honesty....our "forefathers" did have their pockets in mind as well when they started the Revolution. Moreover religious persecution continued here long after the first settler set foot down in America.
Let not your passion rule your reason.

I think that man was right and we know it. Some may not like it but he was right. I know we're celebrating unity but there's no reason to be afraid of our differences. The truth is that we must separate church and state. I don't think we should haul our personal beliefs in court rooms. And this nation was founded upon Christian values? I seem to recall something about economics. And even if it was, there's always going to changes....reason why we have amendments. We could also say this nation was founded upon slavery. Does that mean we should continue this unjust practice? The South could have argued the same way. The fact is that to remove those words is not at all unfair to those who are religious, do believe in God but it is to honor the ideals of democracy. The people who say that we must have under "God" in the pledge are the ones dividing us. Religion (faith) is private. Not everyone wants to share it. It has nothing to do with patriotism.
We share the flag not our faith.
And yes I do believe "under God" was inserted during the Cold War...1954....to separate us from the "evil Communists."
"It is thoroughly necessary to be convinced of God's existence, it is not quite so necessary that one should demonstrate it."---Kant
I'm still recovering from sleep deprivation but it gets confusing because I'm still on the IB clock or I just think too damn much...it can be an exhausting activity leaving you on the edge of sleepiness but not quite there. Reason I felt like sh...everyday when I went to school. I just woke up. I can't seem to fall asleep before 2 am. I may be going crazy...like Yossarian (Catch-22)
Originality is merely producing something in front of people who've not seen it before.
